The new year is well underway. So far it has brought mainly loss, with the death of David Bowie and Alan Rickman. Let’s hope things improve from here…
My first piece of the year is a meditation on dance accompanists and all that they do.
I spoke especially with Cameron Grant, of New York City Ballet, and Michael Scales, of New York Theater Ballet.
In your article “Finding the Right Keys…” you state re Ravel’s Sonatine: “Balanchine made it in 1973 for Violette Verdy, one of his most musical dancers.” Balanchine did make this on Violette Verdy (and on Jean-Pierre Bonnefous), but it was created in 1975, as part of the Ravel Festival that year, not in 1973. You may wish to make the correction on the NY Times website, at least.
Quite right, and I should know, since I participated in the Balnachine Trust taping with Violette Verdy. Thanks for the heads up and I’ll get it corrected. All best,Marina
